Dedication and passion define the staff at Clinica Santa Maria as they hosted their fourth annual baby shower, “Celebrando a Mama.” Underwritten by the Frey Foundation, this event to “Celebrate Mom” was held on Thursday, May 22, from 6-8 p.m. at Clinica on 730 Grandville Ave.

With more than 100 expectant mothers invited, Clinica staff busied themselves for weeks preparing raffle items, massage tables, snacks and special giveaways for each mother to take home.

More than 40 attendees came for the pampering, gifts and food, but most importantly, Clincia’s staff added an educational component to the “Celebrating Mom” event. Fifteen community partners and resource agencies make brief presentations to the mothers and families, relaying the importance of resources and community support.

Some presenters included:

  • Safe Haven Ministries,
  • the Michigan Department of Community Health regarding the importance of vaccines,
  • Safe Kids West Michigan regarding car seat safety,
  • and Journey for Life, which talked about breastfeeding and other challenges new moms may face.

Journey for Life Nurse Kathy speaks about the benefits of breastfeeding to an expectant mother, who has many questions about the process. Kathy debunks myths about painful nursing and pumping to the patient.

“Many of our patients don’t even know what their basic rights are in this country,” said Nancy Pagan, Clinica Business Team lead who founded this event with the rest of the staff. “I saw such a huge need in what they wore, how they carried themselves, that I thought, ‘we could do so much more than just provide health care for our patients.'”

Clinica Santa Maria is viewed as a one-stop shop for many resources for patients and families as Clinica works daily with local resource agencies that can help their patients. “If we identify a need, we can connect them with an agency that can provide assistance,” said Pagan.

“Celebrating Mom is just a huge blessing for our patients, and even for the staff,” said JoAnn Gorby, site manager. “We are just as excited about this event the fourth time around as we were the first time.”
