Each year, the Grand Rapids Business Journal announces the top newsmakers from various business sectors in West Michigan. Bill Manns, President of Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, was chosen as one of only four winners in the category of health care for 2015.

Through an innovative partnership with local educational and health care organizations—along with the workforce development agency West Michigan Works!—Mercy Health has led the way in creating a registered medical assistant apprenticeship program in cooperation with the United States Department of Labor.

This is the first apprenticeship program in the country to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program.

This new program will help to address the growing shortage of health care workers in West Michigan and provide more opportunities for medical assistants to advance their careers in health care.
