The Michigan Works! Workforce Development Board of Kent, Allegan & Barry Counties identified nine Beverly A. Drake Essential Service Award winners for its seventh annual ceremony.
After intense scrutiny from a panel of judges, Spencer Cannon, a Mercy Health nutrition services colleague, was selected as a grand prize winner. Cannon received a certificate, a Meijer gift card and an invitation to the Economic Club of Grand Rapids meeting on January 26, to be recognized in front of hundreds of people.
The internal announcement ─ a surprise to Cannon ─ was made in front of the Nutrition Services department on January 14, 2014, with President Bill Manns present.
From his nomination form:
Spencer has a tremendous daily positive impact on our patients’ hospital stay. He has a knack for making a patient feel at ease and creating a homelike environment at a time when people are filled with anxiety about the medical environment. While all other things are out of their control and oftentimes hard to understand, food is the one item that they know and brings them comfort. Spencer is able to expand upon this by greeting every patient with a smile every time and making them feel welcome. He has an engaging smile that he shares with everyone, including his coworkers. This sets the patient at ease and creates a positive environment.
Congratulations to Spencer Cannon on this great achievement and for being such a positive presence at Mercy Health!
