In March 2015, The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) notified Mercy Health Hauenstein Neurosciences that it was certified as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, for the third year in a row. Annually, the hospital submits information to the NAEC, based on our treatment of patients in order to receive this certification.

“I am pleased that the high level care that we provide in our Epilepsy Program has been recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers,” said Philip Gorelick, MD, medical director, Mercy Health Hauenstein Neurosciences.

According to the NAEC website, a Level 4 Epilepsy Center should provide the more complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostics monitoring, as well as more extensive medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial treatment. Fourth-level centers also offer a complete evaluation for epilepsy, surgery, including intracranial electrodes, and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy.

An excerpt from the NAEC verification letter states:

“Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Epilepsy Center is recognized by the NAEC as a Level 4 epilepsy center. Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest-level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.”
