On Feb. 21, Gov. Rick Snyder announced that he has appointed Kara Morley-Smolek, MD, of Mercy Health Physician Partners to serve a four-year term on the Michigan Board of Medicine.
Morley-Smolek is a physician and lead pediatrician with Mercy Health Physician Partners and a clinical assistant professor with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She has 14 years of experience in primary care medicine and medical education.
“I am excited to have this opportunity to serve on the Michigan Board of Medicine,” said Morley-Smolek. “I hope to be able to offer the perspective of primary care and represent West Michigan and Mercy Health Physician Partners. I expect it will be an interesting journey with many learning opportunities.”
Morley-Smolek is the chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Campus and a member of the Compensation Committee for Mercy Health Physician Partners. She holds a bachelor’s degree in integrative biology from the University of California at Berkley and a medical doctorate from the Northwestern University Medical School.
The 19-member board oversees the practice of more than 36,000 licensed physicians. They are responsible for the examination, regulation, licensing and registration of physicians and surgeons, and for the discipline of licensees who have violated the Michigan Public Health Code.
