As a creative way to bolster teamwork, the staff of Mercy Health Physician Partners – Southwest holds a pumpkin-decorating contest each year in October.

Started in 2012, the contest works by each care team, including the business staff and nurse triage teams, entering a pumpkin in the contest.

Only patients can vote for their favorite pumpkins.

The staff enjoys trying to hide ideas from one another, and the teams get quite competitive.

“Every year we learn what works best and what not to repeat. This year our pumpkins are fake, yet still carvable,” said Practice Leader Kristin Gosko, Mercy Health Southwest.

Not only has this been a successful team-building project, but it also has transformed into a community event.

“We have patients asking if they can bring their children, grandchildren and neighbors in to see the pumpkins,” said Gosko. “If a staff member is having a bad day, they can sit in our waiting room and watch the excitement on our patients’ faces as they scan over the pumpkins to vote for their favorite. We even have people calling us asking if we are going to do the pumpkin contest again.”

This year the staff has created some clever pumpkins, including, but not limited to: horton hears a who

and Dora and Nemo from “Finding Nemo.”kitty cats

“I have an amazing and creative staff, not to mention competitive,” said Gosko. “It is wonderful as a manager to watch the different teams work on these together after work or during their lunch breaks.”

The winning team will be announced on Thursday, October 29 during a staff potluck.Finding nemo and Dora
